Nanna Bayer
I am a ceramicist specialising in the Japanese nerikomi technique, utilising very thin, delicate and colourful porcelain to create functional and sculptural objects. I was an early pioneer of this technique in my homeland of Finland when I started the practice 30 years ago, and I have since developed a signature style that has won me international recognition and acclaim.
My ceramics career began in earnest when I was a resident-member of Fiskars, a 400-year-old ironworks village in Finland and world- renowned artist community (www.onoma.fi), including more than 100 active, professional members. My ceramic artwork has been exhibited in more than 50 exhibitions in 16 countries, and I have run workshops and given invited talks and demonstrations at symposia and conferences around the world.
I moved to Tasmania’s Huon Valley at the end of 2011, where I co- developed Studio Zona. My work has been extensively sold and commissioned by local galleries and museums such as Handmark Gallery and MONA, as well as throughout Australia. I co-organised the Australian Ceramics Triennale 2019 at PW1, where I created a 3- metre-tall fire sculpture together with Selena de Carvalho. I recently completed a one-year Artist in Residency at Contemporary Art Tasmania.
